Dear Friend,

Welcome to Currents, WaterWatch of Oregon's biweekly email digest of news, media, and events. Don't forget to purchase your tickets for our 22nd Annual Celebration of Oregon Rivers, coming up just three weeks from now on Saturday, Oct. 5th. Get your tickets today, and have a great weekend! Here's what's new in Currents:

Monumental Win for Groundwater and Water Sustainability
Marking a sea change victory for long-term water sustainability, the Oregon Water Resources Commission unanimously voted to adopt amended groundwater allocation rules last Thursday that will ensure future groundwater right allocations are guided by a science-based process focused on long-term water sustainability and reliability, end the decades-long "default to yes" approach in issuing new groundwater rights, and better protect surface water hydraulically connected to groundwater like springs, streams, and lakes.

Please Support Willamette Instream Water Right Applications
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife has applied for 269 new instream water rights in the North Willamette, Mid-Willamette, and Upper Willamette subbasins to protect natural flows in dozens of Oregon's cherished waterways. Public comment on the North Willamette streams including the Clackamas, Tualatin, Johnson Creek, Molalla tributaries, and more closes next Thursday the 26th at 5 p.m. Check your inbox on Monday for a WaterWatch action alert you can submit with your comments in support and then share.

Winchester Dam Update on the Jefferson Exchange
WaterWatch Southern Oregon program director Jim McCarthy made his second appearance of the summer on Jefferson Public Radio's Jefferson Exchange last week with host Mike Green to discuss WaterWatch's Winchester Dam campaign, structural integrity concerns about the 134-year-old dam, WaterWatch's intervention in a state water quality enforcement proceeding to ensure accountability for those responsible for last year's catastrophic repairs that resulted in hundreds of thousands of dead fish, and more. Listen here.

Strong Turnout for Steve Duda Author Event in Bend
WaterWatch executive director Neil Brandt and one of our board members were in attendance at Bend's Roundabout Books last Thursday for another packed event with angler and author Steve Duda, as Steve read selections from his new book River Songs and discussed fishing and writing with WaterWatch development officer Jesse Robbins. See Steve and Jesse's recent appearance on Portland's KOIN-TV, and photos from Thursday's event in Bend and our August event with Steve at Powell's Books.
