Spring River Hikes

Dear Friend,

Happy Friday, and congratulations — we've made it to spring! Here's the latest edition of Currents, our biweekly WaterWatch of Oregon email digest and round-up of news, media, programs and related concerns. Have a great weekend, and enjoy the season.

OPB Speaks With WaterWatch for Groundwater Story
Oregon Public Broadcasting connected with WaterWatch executive director Neil Brandt for this story on the Oregon Water Resources Department's newly-proposed groundwater allocation rule revisions, which puts a welcome emphasis on science and data to implement the intent of Oregon's landmark 1955 Ground Water Act, and places Oregon on a more sustainable path to environmentally sound groundwater management. Look for more on the proposed rules and public hearings in the upcoming edition of our Instream newsletter.

WaterWatch Seeks Development Officer to Join Our Team
We're looking for someone who can not only make it rain, but has the development experience and organizational chops to make it pour, as WaterWatch seeks candidates for our full-time Development Officer position to assist in the implementation of our strategic fundraising strategies and events. Being highly motivated with prior conservation nonprofit development experience, the ideal candidate will have the willingness and ability to make hard gift asks in support of our mission-driven organization. If that sounds like you, apply by April 12th.

Annual WaterWatch Auction Event Arrives October 5th
Mark your calendars and save the date, because WaterWatch of Oregon's 22nd Annual Celebration of Oregon Rivers returns to the World Forestry Center in Portland's Washington Park on Saturday, Oct. 5th, for our biggest fundraising event of the year. You won't want to miss the 22nd edition of WaterWatch's annual river party and auction! And while it's a little too early to begin detailing auction packages, it's not too early to make your commitment to our annual event. Contact executive director Neil Brandt for more.

Spring Edition of Instream to Arrive in Early April
A new issue of WaterWatch's Instream newsletter will be in mailboxes in a matter of weeks in early April, with a recap on Oregon's short legislative session for 2024, the latest on Winchester Dam and the backstory on the negotiation process that helped lead to the demolition of the Klamath River dams, and two matters you'll soon receive WaterWatch River Action Alerts on: the newly-announced revisions to the state's groundwater allocation rules, and Oregon's ongoing Integrated Water Resources Strategy (IWRS) draft update process.

Lace Up Your Boots and Explore Oregon's Rivers This Spring
lf the recent blast of warm weather didn't send you into the garage looking for your hiking gear, hopefully this entry from WaterWatch's John DeVoe will prompt you to hit the trail and get some mud on your boots along classic Oregon rivers like the Deschutes, Metolius, and McKenzie — along with one of the best river hikes in the Pacific Northwest, located near Oregon but in another state. Read on for more, with information on governing agencies and basic directions. Take water, practice Leave No Trace ethics, and have fun.
